Anti Aging News:Look More Youthful Than You Are

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

If you are among those that continue to feel sad because you are now beyond your fifties or sixties, I have some news for you. You don′t have to “look” like you′re in your fifties or sixties. Yes, you can “grow” old to fifty years or sixty years, but who says you have to “look” like it. A simple anti aging tip is to always dress as if you were still in your twenties or thirties and always have that smile of youth that you had when you were young. You will be surprised that you will begin looking as young as you “feel”, regardless of your age.

Today’s world of science has a lot of processes that help you look younger as you grow older. A lot of these processes have even gone commercial. This is why you can actually see a sixty year old looking thirty. But we are yet to see a process that stops you from dying.

Life extension began as a dream, a figment of someone’s imagination. But today, it is a major process that is employed in anti aging for keeping people alive in spite of whatever ailments they might suffer from.

The harder you fight your old age, the stronger its reality dawns on you. Your safest bet is to accept and embrace it. This way you will never have to worry about the lines as they grow on your face, or the number of times you have to get up at night to urinate. This way, you never again have to think about subjecting yourself to the surgeon’s blades. This way, you truly get to cheat aging.

Many practices adopted by alternative medicine have been shunned over the ages as begin barbaric and… well, archaic. Now, even as technology and medicine advance, a lot of them are seeing the light of day as being ideal for life extension and anti aging processes. If you have any knowledge of them, it could be helpful to you too.

There are many bodies and associations in the United States today that delve deeply into anti aging practices, information and education. Two of the most prominent and renowned are the Life Extension Foundation, and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. The former focuses on research as well as taking various measures that enhance and supplement feeding. The latter is focused on treating ailments that come with age, employing experts and physicians in the anti aging field.

The various successes recorded in the field of anti age and life extension research would never have been realized without the bumbling mistakes of our ancestors. Some ate all sorts of hideous things, some injected solid substances into their bodies, and some just ate various animal parts. The thoughts of these make us shiver, but we really are no different today, only more sophisticated.

Life extension and anti aging wouldn’t be what they are today if not for people like gerontologists who think it is not a likable phase of life and so cry woe of it. The aged will be better able to accept what is, and not waste much of the little time they have left on vain quests to become young again.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine, The Next Anti-Aging Brain Nutrient

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative instrumental in the biochemical synthesis of acetycholine, an important neurotransmitter without which you would be unable to learn or to memorize anything.  However, it has another property:  it may be able to provide sufficient nutrition to the brain as to allow it to withstand the ravages of time and aging.

Since time immemorial mankind has sought the elixir of life that can be used to give humans everlasting life. While this has yet to be found there is increasing evidence that research is slowly but steadily identifying the factors that cause aging, and identifying means of overcoming them.  Acetyl-L-carnatine is one of those amino acid supplements that is essential to life, and that when combined with other supplements can produce a synergistic effect that shows signs of combating at least some of the oxidative changes in the body that cause aging.

Anti-oxidants such as Vitamins C and E have long been used in attempts to fight against the oxidative effects of free radicals on the body;  free radicals that once were the by products of our metabolism and easily combated, but which are now being increasingly generated in our environment  through pollution, radiation, excessive exposure to sunlight and cigarette smoke.  All of these contribute to aging through the disruption and destruction of body cells by these free radicals.

Acetylcholine is well known to biochemical historians, being one of the first neurotransmitters discovered, and its importance in maintaining the proper operation of the brain is indisputable. It is an essential part of the process that allows brain cells to communicate and to create memory.  Not only that, but also to recall memories and to tell muscles when they should and should not contract. As people age their brain cells become less efficient, this mainly being due to a decline in the acetyl-L-carnitine that produces actylcholine in the body with the aid of the enzyme choline acetyl transferase.

To express it simply, acetyl-l-carnitine enables neurons to maintain communication when the levels of enzymes and other necessary chemicals are falling throughout the body due to the slowing of the body with age.  If we cannot produce it ourselves, then we can either supply it directly though a supplement, or supply its precursor so that the body has the raw materials to produce it.

Most biochemistry is active throughout our lives:  we simply need to provide the raw materials for the necessary reactions to take place.  We can do that through supplements. It has been established that a supplement of acetyl-L-carnitine slows the natural mental decline that begins to occur in middle age and to improved memory and concentration. It is extremely useful that it is easily soluble in both water and fats, so that it can be carried to any part of the body that requires an antioxidant effect.

Studies have also indicated that supplemental acetyl-L-carnitine can promote improved energy generation through its effect on fatty acids.  This support of the metabolism of fatty acids is indicated by its effect on ‘liver spots’, which are a recognized sign of aging.  These brown spots can be seen on the skin as people age, but the lipofuscin that causes it also affects the internal organs and the brain, and can also appear on the lens of the eye.  Lipofuscin is composed of waste products such as damaged proteins and oxidized fats and other lipids.  Its production can be held back by antioxidants, and are reduced by supplemental acetyl-L-carnitine.

This is yet another incidence of how ALC can be used to slow done or even reverse, the effects of aging on the human metabolism and brain functions. Animal studies have indicated that this effect is significantly greater when it is used in conjunction with lipoic acid.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant, occurring naturally in beef, kidney, and green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. It is also a coenzyme, working with with other metabolic enzymes to produce energy.  Moreover, ALA raises the levels of a substance called glutathione which is critical for the proper functioning of the neurons. However, it is their effect on mitichondria that makes a combination of ALA and ALC so interesting in human biology.

Mitochondria are responsible for the generation of power in all cells in the human body through the biosynthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) responsible for all metabolic functions and cell generation. Without mitochondria, oxygen cannot be used. ATP is the substance that is responsible for carrying chemical energy in the body.  During aging, mitochondria are damaged by oxidation through free radicals.  This induced a general decline in energy and cognitive functions.

However it was found in a study with rats that when acetyl-L-carnitine was provided as a supplement, the age-related decline in mitochondrial activity was reversed and oxidation of fatty acids was increased. As a result of this fatty acid oxidation, even more oxidation damage to the mitochondria occurred.  When a supplement of alpha lipoic acid was also given, however, the mitochondrial oxidation was reduced, so that the mitochondria produced a higher energy output with less oxidation damage.

In fact the two worked synergistically, the benefit of acetyl-L-Carnitine and alpha lipoic acid used together being more effective than when given separately. It is possibly the discovery of more such synergistic effects that will eventually lead to longer life spans!

After a period of time, the old rats took on the energy of much younger rats, and the aging process appeared to have reversed.  Tests are now under way on humans, and while the doses needed are large, initial results of a 2001 study at San Francisco State University have indicated a reduction in the oxidative stress induced by exercise of a test group in comparison with a placebo control group.

This type of stress as in indication of damage caused by energy output, and relates to aging. It appears, therefore, that a supplement consisting of both L Carnitine and A lipoic-Acid is more effective that either alone in improving the degeneration of energy levels as well the decline in cognitive and memory functions that comes with age.  It is not yet, however, the elixir of life!

Exercise Is A Major Component In Anti Aging

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Many individuals associate aging with the deterioration of the body and mind but this does not have to be an inevitable consequence. Prevention is the key to living not only longer but living a better quality existence.

Prevention comes in two specific forms, the first is life style choices. Are you eating properly, are you physically active or do you smoke? The second is screening practices to help ensure early detection of diseases or health issues. Do you get a yearly physical, do you get mammograms, do you get checked for prostate cancer, do you know what your blood pressure is, and do you know your cholesterol levels? It is important to stay informed about your health and to listen to your body.

One of the most important lifestyle choices you can make is to stay physically active. It requires a surprising small amount of exercise to acquire huge benefits to your overall health. For instance regular exercise will greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, many cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. By the same token it will increase bone health, muscle strength, joints mobility, and increase balance and stability. Incorporating exercise into your daily life will also translate into fewer visits to the doctor, hospital and decrease your need for medications.

There are many different names used to describe exercises and physical activities that build muscle including, weight lifting, resistance training and strength training. No matter what you decide to call them the goal is to strengthen your muscles and to stop the loss of muscle mass that comes with disuse and age.

Regardless of your current physical abilities there is an activity that will work for you. Many individuals enjoy lifting weights either at home or in a gym very desirable as it keeps them focused on their goals. If lifting weights is not your thing then there are activities that incorporate strength training such as water aerobics, Qigong, Tia Chi or yoga.

If you choose to try weight training for the first time it would be very beneficial to seek the help of a physical trainer. Most gyms allow you to hire a trainer by the hour and if you do decide to join a facility this service is usually thrown into the deal.  If you decide to go it alone there a few safety tips to keep in mind so that you avoid injury as well as get the maximum benefit from your workout. Do not hold your breath during strength training, the general rule is to breath out as you lift and breath in when you are releasing. Also avoid jerking or thrusting the weights, if you need to do this then they are probably too heavy, try some lighter ones. Your movements should be smooth and remember to avoid locking your joints into place at the top or bottom of your motions. It is normal to feel muscle soreness for a few days after you have worked out however you should not be in severe pain, if this is the case then see a doctor.

For the greatest benefit you should be strength training each of your major muscle groups twice a week and work out should consist of two sets of approximately 10 to 15 repetitions. The key to success is consistency, you have to continually challenge your muscles and your body in order to make them stronger and to gain the benefits of prevention.

Look Younger with Laser Skin Peel

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Dermatologists can reduce skin discoloration and other signs of aging by removing the outer layer of the skin with laser resurfacing.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be mitigated or removed. Even scars can be faded until they are barely noticeable or can be hidden with a light foundation.

Laser resurfacing improves color irregularities and marks on the skin and also draws the skin up more tightly. This has the effect of a mild face lift resulting in a more youthful appearance.

The tightening of the skin from laser skin resurfacing will usually persist for several months following the initial treatment. Results do vary from case to case, and so some subjects will benefit more than others.

One very positive benefit is that the laser also stimulates the growth of new collagen, which helps the skin to remain tighter and appear younger looking naturally.

Laser skin peel treatment requires specific techniques applicable for the various skin tones, so this type of therapy is best entrusted to a qualified dermatologist.

Two kinds of lasers commonly used and the practitioner must select the more appropriate for your skin. In some cases they may even use both kinds to treat different levels of scar tissue.

Precautionary note for those with darker complexions - laser therapy can cause scarring to some dark complexioned patients, so a competent professional is essential to ensure no damage is caused by the treatment.

The skin is our natural barrier against infection, so removing the top layers does introduce some risk of infection. Precautionary medication is used to suppress complications. People with sensitive skin may find recovery takes longer and infection more likely.

There is always the possibility of complications with this type of treatment, but the risk is minimal and manageable by competent qualified professionals. Performed correctly, the results can be very good and “turn back the clock” with rejuvenated skin and more youthful looks.

Phytonutrients The Anti-Aging Secret

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in most plants and have the potential to help combat heart diseases and fight cancer.

In plants these are called phytonutrients and are able to work together with our body’s own nutrients to fight disease. To date, scientists have managed to index almost a 1,000 of these unusual compounds, these protective plant compounds are an emerging area of health and nutrition, with new research reported almost daily.

To date a large number of health giving benefits of these phytonutrients have been found, the anti-aging power of blueberries, the joint pain relieving properties of cherries and a whole host of powerful properties in pomegranates are just a few examples.

Containing less sugar than most fruits, the blueberry can also boast a number of other antioxidant properties too. Fruit juice provides many benefits and is a more pleasurable way to consume this type of food, this will help improve our healing ability and blood circulation.

These can also strengthen the body's ability to fight disease and infection due to they're powerful antioxidants and healthy nutrients. You will also find high levels of these substances in apples which can help to reduce the chance of heart disease.

Even lemons and other citrus fruits are proving very capable at providing useful phytochemicals of their own. The combination of phytonutrients in cherries is proving to have properties that can help sufferers of joint pain and fibromyalgia.

The benefits of vitamins B, C, E and certain other minerals are well studied and widely known.

Phytoalexins, also antioxidants like resveratrol, are found in mulberries, blackberries and blueberries have special properties which prevent infection and viruses.

These compounds can help or suppress harmful body aging processes that often end in heart attacks, stroke, faulty blood pressure, and Alzheimer’s disease. Tomatoes too are able to help in the prevention of conditions like heart disease and some cancers. However, the use of concentrated tomatoes in the form of juice, sauces and puree can increase the intake level of this fruit dramatically.

Watermelons, recognized as a refreshing summer fruit also contain some of the most powerful phytonutrients yet found. Now that this information has been made available, are you going to wait to have a serious condition before you start consuming more fruit?

Anti Aging &quotSecrets?&quot

Anti aging and longevity is something we make way too complicated. You don′t need 50 clinical studies to prove a healthy lifestyle can slow or perhaps even reverse aging. The truth is, there are no hidden anti aging secrets or supplements. A long life comes from one main factor: The daily care of our health. Here’s the sad facts: Nearly 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight or obese. The reasons are not a mystery. We eat too much food and we’re don′t exercise enough. However, most of us already know we need to “eat right and get some exercise.”

We just don’t do it.

Why? Well, mostly because it’s easier to forget about our health- until a problem comes up. When we’re anxiously waiting the result of a medical test, it’s a little late to think about what we should have been doing.

Let me share what you need to do, then I tell you the most important part: How to do it.

Step: 1 Get honest. You must honestly recognize the habits you need to fix. If you refuse to see them, you can’t fix them. I know this sounds simple, but you′d be amazed how many of us shorten our futures by refusing to take an honest look at what we do every day when it comes to the care of our precious health.

Step 2: Don’t eat processed foods. You never put anything in a car you’re going to get rid of someday besides gas because you know you’d ruin it. Then why would you put things in your ONE AND ONLY body it was never designed to run right on?

Step 3: Be active every day. What’s the number one factor in anti aging? Aerobic capacity. Your heart and lungs need to be challenged. The same goes for your skeletal muscles. Your body gets older faster without use. You will rust out long before you will wear out.

Step 4: Take action. You have to get started doing something NOW. It doesn’t matter what it is. Something is always better than nothing. Nothing is your greatest enemy. “Nothing” will take away everything you have, faster than anything.

Action is the key. Taking action will show where you need to change things. Losing weight, looking younger, and living longer is all about one thing: Changing unhealthy habits over to healthy ones. Don’t make this more complex than necessary. To slow aging, you need to eat right and challenge yourself physically. I repeat, it all about changing the habits that shorten your life over to new habits that are PROVEN to lengthen your life.

I call it getting a new body and a new life. It’s as simple as this: When you treat your body the way it was designed to be treated, you will slow or even reverse the signs of aging.

You can’t treat your body poorly and expect it to stay strong and healthy as you age- that’s impossible. Don’t expect to do the impossible. If you honestly want to slow or reverse aging you need to take action and change the habits that are causing you to be lazy when it comes to the care of your health. Your body has amazing regeneration abilities. It can and will heal itself. It just can’t do it by itself.

Here’s an honest anti aging secret few people take advantage of: You must have a thought ready that is more powerful than the unhealty habit that is tempting you. It doesn’t matter what that thought is, all that matters is that it works for you. It could be something as simple as thinking you don’t want to leave your spouse old and alone. I repeat, it just has to be a thougt [or thoughts] that are powerful enough for you.

This is how I transformed my life and future. As much as I hate to admit it, I got fat and lazy. Now, when most people see my picture, they think it’s fake! They just can’t believe a fifty year old can have a body that looks twenty-five. The truth is, I didn’t do one special thing. I didn’t take any longevity hormones. All I did was find some thoughts that were more powerful that my unhealthy habits- and I had a ton of them! Then every day, I ate right and exercised. Soon, I felt just like I did when I was in my twenties. My body and mind regenerated. You can’t expect a pill to do this for you.

It wasn’t hard or complicated. I never went hungry or deprived myself. I started with a safe and permanent weight loss plan. My diet was natural. First, I gave up junk food. Then I started a sensible exercise plan. And no it wasn’t a “special” longevity routine for people over fifty or anything. I started with walking. Then I worked my way up to walking and running. Like I said, there’s no special anti aging drugs. It’s all common sense actions that anyone can take.

Get started on your new body and life today. One step at a time you can slow aging and help your body stay younger, longer.

So what’s the hidden “secret” to anti aging? There isn’t one. There’s no magic anti aging pill. There’s no shortcuts. It’s taking action and changing those habits. You can do it. Get started and your new habits will return benefits that you can’t even begin to imagine.

If a regular and average person like me can do it, you can too! You just won’t know the difference it will make in your life until you get started.
